About Varvara Zisimidou
My Story
My path into medicine began with a deep conviction that the body has an extraordinary capacity to heal — when given the right conditions. Growing up in Cyprus, I knew early on that I wanted to push beyond the familiar, to study and train where medicine was being practised at its highest level. That conviction took me to the University of Cologne and through six years of hospital-based training across some of Germany’s most demanding clinical environments — experiences that shaped not only my skills, but the question that would come to define my work: why do so many patients get better test results but feel no better?
During five years of hospital-based Internal Medicine in Germany — rotating through Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Palliative Care, Emergency Medicine, Infectiology, Cardiology and Intensive Care — I witnessed something that no textbook had prepared me for: conventional medicine, at its most sophisticated, excels at acute care, while many patients with chronic conditions can still continue to struggle despite appropriate diagnosis and treatment. Diagnoses were given, medications prescribed, follow-up appointments scheduled — yet the same patients returned, month after month, no closer to understanding why they were unwell.
Having experienced burnout myself — and seeing firsthand how both practitioners and patients can become focused on immediate problems while broader contributing factors remain unexplored — I knew I needed a different framework. That search led me to the Institute for Functional Medicine, where I completed the AFMCP (Applying Functional Medicine in Clinical Practice) training. It was a turning point. Shortly after, I moved to the Department of Naturopathic and Integrative Medicine at Kliniken Essen Mitte — one of the few hospital departments in Germany where naturopathic and integrative approaches are practised within conventional medicine — where I trained in neural therapy (DGfAN), naturopathic medicine, ear acupuncture (NADA and RAVA), and integrative nutrition, building a framework that allowed me to work more systematically with the factors contributing to chronic illness alongside symptom management.
In 2026 I joined Tsintavis Functional Medicine in Athens, bringing the precision of German hospital-based medicine together with the systemic tools of functional and integrative care. Today I work with patients from Greece and internationally who are tired of being told their results are “normal” when they know something is fundamentally wrong.
Where Precision Meets the Whole Person
My medical training is rooted in rigorous diagnostics — the kind you develop in hospital medicine when you cannot afford to miss anything. But I have also learned that lab results do not tell the whole story. Chronic illness lives at the intersection of biochemistry, environment, stress, nutrition, and the nervous system.
“True healing happens when we stop asking ‘what is the diagnosis?’ and start asking ‘why is this person’s body responding this way?’ The answers are almost always there — we just need to look at the whole picture.”
Neural therapy, for example, works with the autonomic nervous system to address interference fields that perpetuate chronic symptoms. Naturopathic medicine brings therapeutic tools that work with the body’s own regulatory systems. Functional medicine provides the framework to connect metabolic, hormonal, gut, and immune patterns into a coherent picture. Together, these approaches allow me to offer a broader clinical framework for patients with complex, persistent chronic conditions.
Serving Patients Worldwide
Based in Athens, Greece, Dr. Varvara Zisimidou and Panagiotis Tsintavis work with patients from more than 25 countries through in-person and remote consultations.
For international patients, remote consultations can offer a practical and consistent way to access ongoing professional support without the need to travel to Athens.
Within her independent medical practice, Dr. Zisimidou provides medical assessment and Internal Medicine evaluation and, where clinically and legally appropriate, diagnosis, treatment, prescribing and follow-up care.
Panagiotis Tsintavis provides clinical nutrition and systems-based Functional Medicine services within his independent dietetic practice.
Depending on the individual case and practitioner involved, care may also include review of existing laboratory findings, consideration or coordination of relevant testing, nutrition and supplement guidance, and ongoing follow-up within each practitioner’s professional scope.
Working as Part of a Collaborative Practice
Tsintavis Functional Medicine brings together two independent practitioners: Dr. Varvara Zisimidou, MD, and Panagiotis Tsintavis, MSc, RD, FMCP.
Where appropriate, their different professional perspectives can complement one another — combining medical and Internal Medicine assessment with clinical nutrition and a systems-based Functional Medicine approach.
This allows patients with complex health concerns to access both medical and nutritional perspectives when relevant, while each practitioner continues to provide their professional services independently and within their own scope of practice.
